The Root Chakra, our place of Courage

The Root Chakra is one of seven major energy centers that manage the flow of chi (vital life force) in our bodies. There are hundreds more that work in tandem with the acupuncture/acupressure points and run along our meridians. Meridians are like the chi’s freeway system but that is a whole other workshop worth of information, worthy of a deep dive in itself. A blockage either emotional or physical at any one point can send a ripple effect throughout the body and your life. Everything is connected.

For thousands of years humans have been using natural elements like plant oils, herbs and stones to keep this system in balance. Balanced Chakras mean a healthy life with less stress and illness. Generally balance of this system starts with the Root, our base of operations and a grounding force. Next can be the Crown Chakra and then work the points that lay between moving downward. Some people choose to work from the bottom up and end with the Crown, it all depends on if you have identified a particular Chakra that needs attention or need an overall wash.

If you feel an imbalance in the Root Chakra get outside barefoot and feel yourself connect to the pulse of the earth. Be it on grass, sand or dirt; feel the connection, soak in the vibration of life. This Chakra opens down grounding us in family and basic survival, one with the planet and all of its inhabitants. It is our place of courage. The Root is in charge of absorbing energy from the earth, building hard tissue and bones, teeth, nails and the spinal column, it protects the intestines, prostate health and cell formation. An imbalance can manifest in addiction, over or diminished sex drive, digestive disorders, obesity and a loss of direction. Try eating red foods like beets (and their greens), cabbage, apples, onion, raspberries, pomegranate, and tomatoes as well as leafy greens, turnip, sweet potatoes, parsnip, rutabaga, carrots (any root veg), peanuts, lemon, oranges, ginger, turmeric, beans, paprika, cayenne and horseradish.

Essential oils associated with the Root Chakra are woody and grounding ones like patchouli, frankincense, cedar, vetiver, myrrh, pine and grapefruit.

Stones: Obsidian awakens the inner warrior. Jaspers, particularly dark tones and reds, stabilize our vital force; grounding us in times of uncertainty in order to offer compassion and balance to those around us. Bloodstone, garnet, coral, onyx, rhodonite, ruby, black tourmaline, lodestone, fire agate, deep red carnelian and hematite are also associated with this Chakra. Smokey quartz is a good choice to make a gemstone elixir to aid the Root Chakra.

Flower essences available at (fesflowers.com) added to a glass of water along with true intentions and meditation on the issue can aid Chakra health balance.

Use larch and sweet chestnut for courage,

elm for self esteem,

willow for addiction or sadness,

oak for setting boundaries

and crab apple, pine or star of bethlehem for healing.
